Thinking Green: GT Implementing Sustainable Technology
Georgia Tech actively implements and supports sustainability and environmental stewardship. As stated in the Georgia Tech strategic plan, our mission is "to provide the state of Georgia with the scientific and technological knowledge base, innovation, and workforce it needs to shape a prosperous and sustainable future and quality of life for its citizens." We recognized the need to build credibility and trust through our own practices on the campus. With sustainability as a major theme in our campus master plan, we've advanced from recycling and green purchasing programs to green buildings to sophisticated eco-commons concepts for managing the built environment. In this presentation, we will explore Georgia Tech's sustainability efforts, successes, and plans.
The Epic Adventure of Recovering the Lost Squadron
In 1980, Pat Epps (ME 56) and Richard Taylor (M ARCH 64) heard stories about the Lost Squadron while flying a single-engine Bonanza airplane around the Arctic Circle. The squadron, consisting of six P-38s and two B-17 Flying Fortress bombers, was forced to land in severe weather in Greenland during World War II on a mission to Iceland. Mr. Epps and Mr. Taylor became fascinated with the story and in August of 1981 they began searching for the aircraft. In 1988, with the help of subsurface radar, the expedition was able to locate the eight planes 260 feet below the ice and snow. They recovered one P-38 and parts of one of the B-17s, returned them to Atlanta and subsequently restored the P-38 to flying condition. Don't miss their account of this bigger than life adventure that lasted eight years, cost more money than either ever dreamed and made them the poster boys of modern adventurers.
